Then pick the flowers you want based on proximity and an idea of the outcome. Once you have all the colors, sizes, and scents you need, arrange them harmoniously in a vase.

The bulls' eye is the main idea; the concentric rings represent the support and paragraph order.

• A well-constructed writing is like a house

Central heating is the thesis that warms every room. Rooms are chapters or paragraphs clearly connected by hallways which are transitions. The front porch and exterior shape of the house is the introduction. The conclusion can be anywhere. It can be out the back door, in the attic with Professor Plum, or in the conservatory with Mrs. Peacock.

• Writing is like a photo story

Start with long shots and arrivals, zoom in for the details, then pan back at the end.

• Writing is like hiking a trail

You have many pleasant decisions to make along the way. Do you take the most scenic or the most direct route? If a detour is worth the view, and contributes to the whole, do you take it? Hills and valleys are chapters or paragraphs in contiguous order. Pack light and don't get lost.
