Extra Credit Options

 
    Four Options: Library Card, Magazine Subscriptions, Vocabulary, and Wonderful Person Awards  
  An active Benicia Public Library Card in the student's name is worth 50 pages of credit toward the 1,000 pages required for Independent Reading  
   
  Magazine subscriptions (2 maximum) can earn you up to 50 pages of reading credit maximum for the school year
  • A magazine subscription in the student's name is worth 25 pages of credit
  • A second magazine subscription in the student's name is worth 25 pages
  
  Finding Vocabulary Words earns points that add up to A grades in my grade book. These A grades do not erase low grades. The As are added to the total number of grades before they are averaged at the end of the semester.  
 

The Point Chart for Vocabulary-Find As

Written words found in context in outside reading and brought it earn = 2 points each

Spoken words heard in context outside the classroom that are supported by a note from the speaker earn = 1 point each

Eight points = 1 A grade added to the semester total

The same word can only be found twice for credit. However, it can be found in each of its grammatical forms. For example, Johnny can find IRONY two times, IRONIC two times, and IRONICALLY two times for 12 points total.

Sometimes I will put a few bonus words on the board for a random length of time. Bonus words are worth double during that time.

10 As of Extra Credit from Vocabulary Finds (40 words) is the maximum limit per semester

 
  Wonderful Person Awards

Each student receives 2 WPA certificates to begin the school year. Additional WPAs can be earned during the semesters for exceptional performances and special accomplishments

WPAs are non-transferable. You cannot give them to friends or borrow them from friends

WPAs are valuable in a variety of ways:

  • They can count as an eight-point A in the grade book
  • They can substitute for missing an over-night assignment
  • They can excuse one tardy or buy out of a misbehavior VVPP
  • They can be used as 20 pages of Independent Reading
  • They can be used as two free right answers on the final vocabulary exam
