Independent Reading Program

Each English Lit student will read 1,000 pages independently this school year (500 fall, 500 spring semester).

Chose titles from a Suggested Reading List of nearly 200 books. All genres and reading levels are represented. The book list has grown each year based on recommendations from freshmen students.

You can view the reading list here

Grading:

Each book has a check-for-reading quiz of 50 to 100 questions. Students will take a quiz after each book to determine total pages awarded.Some quizzes were written by me, some were store-bought, and many were written by previous students who wished to recommend a title to the reading list. . Test questions are true/false, multiple choice, matching.

Grading of independent-reading quizzes is designed to be generous with A's by eliminating D's and trimming C's

A = 84 - 100-percent correct: earns all pages

B = 78 - 83-percent correct: earns 80 percent of pages

C = 70 - 76-percent correct: earns 50 percent of pages

0 - 69-percent correct earns no credit

Conditions:

Students will be allowed to see, hear, and study the quizzes before taking them.

Students will be allowed to use a page or two of notes during each quiz.

Students will not be allowed to repeat a quiz without first conferencing with the teacher

Students can take their reading quizzes on the Final Friday of each month almost any class day, overlapping with the regular lesson plans. Quizzes can also be taken outside of class time, such as after school, with prior notice to the teacher.

Cheating -- on any reading test results in an F for the project (30 Fs) and  two Saturday schools

Bonuses:

Students who are ahead in their reading in the spring semester will be allowed to select a book not on the list, read it, create a 50-question quiz, and earn full page credit on their chosen title. Books submitted for this option need to be previewed by me first for appropriateness, potential popularity, and availability.
