VOCABULARY CONTEXT ERRORS

Definitions of marks on corrected papers

NC = NO CONTEXT -- The meaning of the word is not in the sentence.

Example: I had amity with my classmates.

VC = VAGUE CONTEXT -- The meaning is hard for an idiot to  understand. It's better than "no context."

Example: I enjoyed amity with my friendly classmates.

WC = WRONG CONTEXT -- 1) Author has misunderstood the definition; check  the dictionary. 2) It can also mean, the author  has  used the word in an awkward or unorthodox context.

Example 1: I felt amity toward the swarm of stinging bees as they attacked me.

Example 2: I was amity at the party.

AC  = APPENDED CONTEXT --  1) Author has attached the  dictionary definition to the end of the sentence; 2) Author has inserted the definition redundantly after the word. This isn’t necessarily wrong, but is too rudimentary, too easy. Try harder.

Example 1: I enjoyed amity with my friendly classmates,  peaceful relations.

Example  2: I enjoyed amity, peaceful relations, with  my  classmates.

WPOS  = WRONG PART OF SPEECH -- Author has mistaken an  adjective for  a noun, or a noun for a verb, or an adverb as an  adjective, or some such mix up.

Example of wrong way:
The virago woman had a bad temper. (noun is used as an adjective)

Example of wrong way:

The angry man had great rancorous toward his enemy. (adjective as noun)

SENTENCE CONSTRUCTION ERRORS

AWK = A catch-all phrase meaning the sentence makes little or  no sense.

Example: I amity my friends in the relation of goodness for all.

RO  = RUN ON -- Two sentences are written as one. If a  comma  is used where a period belongs, that is a COMMA-SPLICE RUN-ON.

Wrong:  I  enjoyed  amity with my friendly  classmates,  we  had peaceful relations throughout high school.

Right:  I  enjoyed  amity with my friendly  classmates. We  had peaceful relations throughout high school.

FRAG = INCOMPLETE THOUGHT -- (Sentences have subjects (nouns) and predicates (the noun does something, aka verb). Fragments are missing one of those two key ingredients.

Example: Amity toward my classmates. The old man in the gray suit. During an air raid.

PUNCT  =  PUNCTUATION IS MISSING OR MISUSED --  Usually  the  end period is missing. It could also mean a missing or misused  apostrophe, semicolon, question mark
