How to use FTP to Upload Files to your personal Web space on the Internet

1. Acquire Web space. You may use the Web space that comes with your ISP service (visit their Web site or call for information) or you may join one of the free sites.

FREE Website Providers Tripod Angelfire Lycos PageBuilder GeoCities Blogger Fortune City 20 megs! Homestead

2. Get two pieces of information:

    A. Get the FTP address to connect to for uploading.
For Example, Tripod's FTP site is ftp.tripod.com

    B. Get the URL address that people would use for finding your site (replace the /gibb0 with your own login name
For Example, Tripod's URL for visitors using browsers is http://members.tripod.com/gibb0

3. Get an FTP program. We recommend WS_FTP LE Freeware and will use it in our illustrations.

This course recommends WS-FTP LE freeware edition from ZDNet Downloads. Search for WS-FTP LE. Download it, install it, open it, and you will see in the "Session Properties" window a list of somewhat active FTP servers that allow you to log in anonymously. Pick one, select the box next to "anonymous" and hit "OK." You should log in successfully. The drive on the right is the remote server. The drive on the left is your local computer. You will see arrows --> <-- right and left in the center of WS-FTP for sending files back and forth.

Above is a screen shot of WS-FTP open to the Web host where this course was developed. Notice the directory structures are identical on the local and the remote site. To upload, click a file or folder on the left and the Right Arrow in the middle. To download, click a file or folder on the right and the Left Arrow in the middle.

To manage a successful Web site that has many folders and files, be sure that you duplicate the entire Web site folder and file structure on your home computer first. Then upload the whole structure with one click. After that, to maintain it you can simply upload the individual files and folders you modify with time.
